Esus-Group welcomes its newest portfolio member in South Africa - The Korner, a vibrant new eatery opening on the corner of St Georges Mall and Church street, is the latest on a growing list of restaurants revitalizing the Central Business District’s bustling St Georges Mall.
Drawing inspiration from the vibey character of the neighbourhood, the creators of The Korner aspire to do more than serve great food. From its inception, the restaurant has been designed as a space to wine, dine, hold meetings, grab-and-go express, satisfying the need for an easy, sociable breakfast to dinner option.
Long-time restaurateur and Esus-Group Director, Gilles Blanc, was driven by a strong sense of place and purpose to create a restaurant built around fresh, sustainable ingredients, providing the best comfort food and local hangout.
An express bar will open early to serve morning commuters great coffees in partnership with Truth Coffee as well as grab- and-go breakfasts and lunches, a mere stone’s throw from the iconic Green Market Square, surrounding hotels and corporates.
Breakfast service will begin early and run through till 12pm daily, seven days a week, with a menu offering a premium meat selection, salads, burgers, pizza and loaded fries with more than 6 options and 13 topping choices, including smoked mozzarella, bacon, prawns and avocado. All of the ingredients down to the condiments are made in-house or sourced locally. Free fiber WiFi is offered in a comfortable 130 seater, ground-floor community space overlooking the St Georges Mall and Mandela Rhodes Place.
A full bar with an in-house mixologist will serve creative cocktails, an array of craft beers from Devil’s Peak Brewery and a selection of local wines.
The dinner menu puts a fresh spin on comfort food, including:
· The Babelas Crazy Loaded Fries: Loaded cheese sauce, mushroom, blue cheese, gravy and truffle oil
· The Korner Burger: Hash brown, maple dipped bacon, smoked mozzarella, BBQ aioli and fried egg
· The Tomahawk (for 2) : Rib-eye on the bone, flame grilled, basted in our signature BBQ sauce our house seasoning salt with fries
· Chicken and Waffles: Buttermilk fried chicken wings, buttery waffles with authentic maple syrup and American gravy
“We opened our first restaurant, The 41 in Camps Bay almost 3 years ago. Since its growing success we decided to open The Korner as its sister restaurant. As most sisters are, the two are vastly different – The 41, a laid back beach environment, showcasing contemporary South African Food with Mediterranean twists, whilst we wanted to create the Korner as a down to earth, vibey city hangout to indulge in comfort food and our beloved Crazy Loaded Fries. “Everything in this place has a story to tell,” said Blanc. “And the story of this restaurant is tied to the story of this neighbourhood – refreshed, revitalized and bursting with energy.”
The menu at the The Korner was created by Esus-Group Executive Chef, Wesley Peters. We have created very American inspired food – rich in taste and casual dining experience … The focus was also made to get great quality food in a limited time (CBD, people don’t have time…). But also a great spot for the tourists who walk around the city centre to have a nice stop to relax, eat and drink. With our exciting menu, we also want to bring a vibrant atmosphere in that area with live music, DJs, regular events, first Thursdays…….”
About The Korner The Korner is locatedin Mandela Rhodes Place, on the corner of Church Street and St Georges Mall, in the Central Business District of Cape Town. The express bar and restaurant opens at 6 a.m. Breakfast and brunch service runs from 6 a.m.-12 p.m. seven days a week.
